He was born in 1959 in Çaykara Uzuntarla Village. Then he went to Germany with his family and stayed there for a long time. He immigrated to Cyprus with his family in 1975. He graduated from Beruf Shulehouse Vocational Technical School in Bern, Switzerland in 1981.

Between 1984-1985, he worked as a public relations agent and manager in various companies in Libya and later in Saudi Arabia.

Demir, who made a definite return to the Turkish Republic of Cyprus in 1987, served as the head of Yeniboğaziçi Parent-Teacher Association between 1993-1996 and the Mayor of Yeniboğaziçi between 2002-2006. In the local elections held on 29 June 2014, he was elected as the independent mayor of Yeniboğaziçi.

In the local elections held on 25 December 2022, he was re-elected as the mayor of Yeniboğaziçi as an independent.

Demir, who speaks German, English and Arabic very well, is married and has two children.
